Urban Indian Double Standards While Dealing With Politicians And Public Figures
When it comes to dealing with politicians and public figures, the so called cool, progressive, tech savvy, urban Indian youths employ double standards…
On one side, they are against the traditional ‘goody’ image of common Indians… They believe in live-in relationships, premarital sex, living their life as they please, hanging out in ‘tiny’ or ‘funky’ dresses with people of different sex, find it absolutely OK to drink and smoke with them, have ‘vulgar’ conversation with them, etc (and I don’t find any of them wrong, it’s just that the traditional way of life in India doesn’t encourage people to do all these things).
And on the other hand, their respect for politicians and public leaders diminishes when they(the youths) find them (the leaders) doing the same, even if this particular aspect of the leader has nothing to do with the latter’s role in the socio-political activities.
For example, many Indian youths, as evident from their social media activities, actually encourage the Sanghi’s attempt to demonise Nehru, by sharing Nehru’s photos with Lady Mountbatten, or him sitting among a group of scantily dressed young girls…
This double standards exhibited by Indian youths is one of the reasons why the likes of Narendra Modi get popularity… For he has portrayed himself as an altruistic figure, one who has no personal life, and has dedicated his entire life for the nation (Bharat, I mean).
Ambedkar rightly said, “In India , ‘Bhakti’ or what maybe called the path of devotion or hero worship plays a part in politics unequalled in magnitude by the part it plays in politics of any other of the world. ‘Bhakti’ in religion maybe a road to salvation of the soul. But in politics, ‘Bhakti’ or hero worship is a sure road to degradation and to eventual dictatorship.”
We Indians, deep inside our heart, want our leaders to be Godly figures. Not that, Hindu gods were all God in the truest sense of the idea (I say ‘idea’ because I don’t believe in the ‘existence’ of God). Nevertheless, Narendra Modi, with his Hindutva ideology, and his leaving behind his wife, and his dialoguebaaji, has successfully portrayed himself as a Messiah…
But what is more disturbing is Indian youths’ double standards attitude…
And that’s a reason why we are heading towards degradation and Hindutva dictatorship…
